Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 8 slices day-old French bread, sliced 1 inch thick
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil, divided

Instructions

  1. Beat eggs lightly.
  2. Combine with the milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Pour into a flat-bottomed dish somewhat larger than the slices of bread.
  4. Dip the bread into the mixture on both sides, one slice at a time, stirring the mixture after each. Do not soak. Place bread on a plate and allow to stand for a few minutes.
  5. In a medium skillet, heat about 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat.
  6. Cook bread for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Add more oil for the second batch.
